This industry is divided into two main categories: mechanical repair and body shop work. Mechanical repair contributes 60% of the annual revenue, and body shop work contributes 40%, for an industry that has a combined annual revenue of $75 billion. According to ResearchandMarkets.com, the growth rate for 2008 is expected to be 4.1% for automotive services- most of that growth coming from smaller, individually owned companies. Only 10% percent of the market is held by larger companies. It is a very labor-intensive and detailed line of work, and the average annual revenue per worker is about $90,000. Some college level education is required, but a degree in engineering or automotive science from a university or technical institute is preferred, as well as some experience working in the field.
